Mont Saint-Michel

15.7.21

I visited a local cider shop, bought some cider and asked (in french) if I could stay the night in their car park. The lovely owner nodded and took me round the side, where I parked with these fantastic views of fields and Mont St Michel itself.

It was less than 5 minutes to cycle to the free shuttle bus which took me over the bridge and onto the mont. I arrived there about 1pm. It was hot, sticky and absolutely heaving. I could barely move. I decided to leave and try again in the evening when (hopefully) everyone else had gone.

I went back at about 7pm. It was cool, quiet and magical.

After exploring all the little streets I arrived at the very top, the entrance to the abbey. There was a sign advertising tickets for a self-guided evening tour which ran from 7-12pm and included a light show. It was 15. I debated for a long time whether it was worth it – I decided it wasn’t and walked down to the bottom before changing my mind! So back up I climbed.

It was so worth it. There was atmospheric religious music, different lights, art work and illusions. It was creepy and spiritual at the same time. The pictures do not do it justice.
