Ponte de Lima is said to be the oldest town in Portugal because Queen Teresa of Spain declared it an official town in 1125, just before Portugal became independent.

In the Middle Ages it was a fortified town with walls 600 meters long. Some of the turrets still remain.

It has a very large and ornate church squished into the narrow streets
